Transform a humble cardboard box, paper cup and bits and bobs from around the house into the perfect ‘make and play’ diy camera. We had so much fun making a camera from a laundry detergent lid recently we just had to make another one :)

Craft materials

Cover the cardboard box with duck tape – substitute with tin foil, wrapping paper or paint if you don’t have tape.

Cut the paper cup/lens across the middle

And cover this too in tape, or paint if you wish

The really fun part!!

Now it’s time to glue everything into place
– the cosmetic lid to the top for the flash
– the thread spoon, button, bead or circles of cardboard on for the camera dial – it’s very important to set the correct photo mode
– and then with a black marker draw on some camera-like graphics
– glue some ribbon or an old belt or braid onto the sides of the box to carry the camera along on your travels

Molly got the great idea that she should add some drawings or pictures cut from a magazine in the centre of the cup so everyone would know what she was looking at through the camera lens xx

Yee Haw! – How To Make a DIY Pool Noodle Hobby Horse http://www.nesstsg.com/recycled-craft-diy-pool-noodle-hobby-horse/ http://www.nesstsg.com/recycled-craft-diy-pool-noodle-hobby-horse/#comments Tue, 18 Aug 2015 20:06:27 +0000 http://www.nesstsg.com/?p=18507

A fun 15 minute MESS-FREE recycled craft for kids

Has your little one’s swimming skills improved so much that they no longer need the support of a pool noodle? Tired of tripping over it round the house? You could always give it to a friend’s child of course, or chop it up to make pool noodle spiders!, but before you do consider upcycling it into a super fun DIY hobby horse for hours of endless imaginative play, inside and out.

recycled craft, pool noodle craft, summer craft, recycled crafts

Materials you need from around the house:
- broom handle
– pool noodle (with hollow centre)
– duck tape
– scraps of fabric, old tshirts (for the mane)
– fast acting glue or glue gun
– white drawing paper and black marker
– scissors
– twine for the reins

Step 1
Cut the pool noodle in half (you can get two horses out of one pool noodle). Slide the end of the pool noodle over the broom handle.

Step 2
Bend the pool noodle over as shown and hold into this shape with the duck tape.

Step 3
With a craft knife make a slit in the back of the pool noodle, about half an inch deep.

recycled craft, pool noodle craft, summer craft, recycled crafts

Step 4
Squeeze your glue into the slit and slide in the scraps of fabric, felt or old tshirt. Hold the pool noodle at either side of the slit until the glue sets and the ‘mane’ is secure. Then just cut the fabric into strips as shown.

Step 5
It’s doodle time! invite your child to doodle some eyes and nostrils with a thick black marker – of course in Molly’s world everything has long dramatic eyelashes!

recycled craft, pool noodle craft, summer craft, recycled crafts

Then just cut out the individual eyes and nostrils and glue them onto the pool noodle, as shown.

And finally, the finishing touch, every horsey needs reins so in the absence of thick twine I pulled three lengths of the butchers twine I had through the pool noodle nose area and platted them at either side.

And tada! The?new trusty sidekick is ready and excited to giddy-up and gallop into the garden…

Toilet Roll Crafts – Meet Mr Pirate and Mr Parrot! http://www.nesstsg.com/toilet-roll-crafts-pirate/ http://www.nesstsg.com/toilet-roll-crafts-pirate/#comments Thu, 04 Jun 2015 13:25:33 +0000 http://www.nesstsg.com/?p=18369

Arrrgh me harties! Today we’re here to share two awesome pirate toilet roll crafts! This cute cardboard pirate and parrot love sailing the seven seas and having adventures in their?cardboard pirate ship! So call over your crafty?first mates and let’s get ready for some pirate-loving fun! Arrrgh!

toilet roll crafts

Materials you need to gather:

  • Toilet Rolls
  • Craft Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Red, Black, White and Striped Paper
  • Glue stick and/or White Glue
  • Clear Tape
  • Scissors
  • Feather
  • Markers
  • Blue and yellow tissue paper
  • Clothespins
  • Googly Eyes
  • Optional: White rectangle stickers

First, let’s prep our toilet rolls!

toilet roll crafts

Paint the top half of one toilet roll brown for the pirate’s face. Cut the other toilet roll in half for the parrot. (If you’d like, you can certainly use a whole toilet roll for the parrot. I cut mine in half so that he would be smaller than the pirate.)

Now let’s prep our decorative items!

For the pirate, you’ll need a front hat shape, a long black rectangle for the back of the hat, a striped rectangle for the shirt, and a long black rectangle for the pants. For the parrot, you’ll need a long red rectangle for the body, feet, a beak, and tissue paper cut into the shape of feathers.

toilet roll crafts

To make the pirate:

toilet roll crafts

Glue on the pants and then the shirt. Cut your white rectangular stickers (or paper) to create a skull and crossbones. Stick it to the front of your pirate hat. Then, glue the front and back of your hat to the tube. Use clothespins to keep things in place. When everything is dry, draw on details. Tape a feather to the inside of the toilet roll. Then, cut out a tiny triangle in the bottom to separate his legs.

toilet roll crafts

To make the parrot:

toilet roll crafts

Glue on your red rectangle. Then, glue on your tissue paper feathers starting from the bottom to the top. (tissue paper is quite flimsy, so I used a glue stick here). Then, stick on your white stickers. Add googly eyes. Then, draw a black circle between your eyes.? Then, glue on your beak and your little feet. Add any extra details with markers.

Pop them aboard your pirate ship and you’re set for some exciting imaginary play on the high seas! Hmm, what adventures these two will get into? Will they look for treasure? Or, perhaps they’ll find a cardboard mermaid or two to hang with?

Have a lovely time making these pirate crafts with the kiddos!? Happy crafting!

DIY Toys – Cardboard Cone Binoculars http://www.nesstsg.com/diy-toys-cardboard-cone-binoculars/ http://www.nesstsg.com/diy-toys-cardboard-cone-binoculars/#comments Mon, 01 Jun 2015 22:56:34 +0000 http://www.nesstsg.com/?p=18420

Cardboard cones discarded by commercial dressmarkers and sewing/knitting companies are a sturdy and versatile crafting material for making DIY Toys – they work perfectly for handmade dolls, penguins and other animals, or traffic cones for racing toy cars… and today we made super cool neon binoculars, because we are ALL about neon at the moment! and plan on spending much more time outside as soon as the weather heats up a bit (it still feels like winter here!)

DIY Toy Binoculars – no paint, no mess, make in 10/15mins tops!

diy toys

The materials list is really short for this one:
– cardboard cones (or just use toilet roll cores, kitchen roll cores instead)
– scrap of cardboard
– glue gun
– twine (I had some neon parachute cord waiting for me to do something with it!)
– duck tape (any household tape, washi tape will work just as well)

Start by gluing a little cardboard stint between the cones to hold the eyes pieces at the correct distance apart for your child’s eyes.

diy toys

Wrap the ends with duck tape

diy toys

I cut slits in the tape the whole way around the curve and folded the tape over in tabs so it would lie neater, no puckers!

diy toys

Then carefully wiggle the point of the scissors through each side of the binoculars

diy toys

And thread in the cord/twine, knotting to secure on the inside.

diy toys

And finally use the duck tape to decorate.

diy toys

For some cool and trendy binoculars for checking what’s up, what’s down and what’s all around xx

Make Me! Stick Dolls For Imaginative Play http://www.nesstsg.com/stick-dolls-craft-kids/ http://www.nesstsg.com/stick-dolls-craft-kids/#comments Tue, 26 May 2015 13:18:10 +0000 http://www.nesstsg.com/?p=18381

When you’re a child you see everything differently, you see the world with a sprinkle of imagination. A cardboard tube isn’t just a cardboard tube – it’s a wand, a pair of skis, a light saber. Likewise sticks aren’t just sticks, they make simple and engaging handmade stick dolls, fence posts for a fairy garden, or even a ladder to the moon! – there are no limits to what everyday ‘stuff’ can be.
